How to set up a multilingual Discord server

Make your Discord server a place where everyone can write in their own language. This guide walks through setting up inline translation with Talksy: the channels, member opt-in, and optional language channels.

Setup timeline

Add Talksy

Choose channels

Member opt-in

Time
1 minute each

Step 1: add Talksy to your server

Invite Talksy and pick your server. You need the Manage Server permission on it. Add Talksy to Discord

Permissions Talksy asks for

  • Send Messages
  • Manage Webhooks (for inline translations)
  • Read Message History
  • Use Slash Commands
  • Embed Links
  • Add Reactions and Manage Messages (for flag reactions and stealth mode)

Step 2: choose the channels to translate (admins)

The quickest way: click ⚡ Set up on the welcome message Talksy posts when it joins, and pick your channels. Prefer commands? These do the same.

Enable translation

First, turn translation on for the server:

/server enable

This lets members who opt in be translated. It doesn't translate anyone by itself.

Add translation channels

Add each channel where translation should work:

/server channel add channel:#general
/server channel add channel:#gaming
/server channel add channel:#support

Tip: start with your main channels and add more as needed.

Check the configuration

Verify your setup:

/server settings

This shows:

  • Whether translation is on
  • The enabled channels
  • Routes, glossary and flag-reaction settings

Step 3: members opt in

Choose your language

Pick the language your messages should also appear in:

/talksy language:spanish

From then on, each message you send in an enabled channel is also posted in Spanish, in the same channel, under your name and avatar with a small flag (for example "Lucía 🇪🇸"). The setting is per server.

Optional: stealth mode

For cleaner channels, stealth mode deletes your original message once it's translated:

/talksy language:spanish stealth:true

Only the translated version stays visible.

Step 4: give each language its own channel (optional)

Rather keep languages in separate channels? A channel route mirrors one channel into another, fully translated, for everyone, with no opt-in needed. Deletes, replies and reactions stay in sync across the linked channels.

/server route add source:#general target:#general-es language:spanish

Every server gets one route free, with 200 routed messages a month. Talksy Pro adds unlimited routes and channel groups.

Step 5: test your setup

Quick test

  1. Have a member who opted in send a message in an enabled channel
  2. Watch the translation appear inline under their name, with a flag (for example "John 🇪🇸")
  3. Try the manual translate command: /translate text:Hello world to:french
  4. React to any message with a flag emoji (🇫🇷, 🇩🇪 and so on) to translate it

Best practices for multilingual servers

Channel organization

  • Enable translation in your main channels
  • Consider language-specific channels for native speakers; a channel route can fill them automatically
  • Keep important channels multilingual
  • Use channel topics to show which languages are welcome

Community guidelines

  • Tell new members that flag reactions work with no setup
  • Pin the /talksy instructions in your welcome channel
  • Be patient with language barriers
  • Celebrate cultural diversity

Moderation tips

  • All translations are visible to moderators
  • Original speaker info is preserved
  • Set clear multilingual community rules
  • Consider a multilingual moderator team

Performance

  • Start with essential channels
  • Review your configuration with /server settings
  • A typical translation takes about a second
  • Translations post right under the original, so the conversation stays in order

Troubleshooting common issues

Translations not appearing

  • Check the server is enabled: /server settings
  • Check the channel is added: /server channel add channel:#general
  • Make sure the member picked a language: /talksy language:spanish
  • Check their current settings: /talksy

Missing permissions error

Talksy needs these permissions in the channel:

  • Manage Webhooks (critical for inline translation)
  • Send Messages
  • Read Message History

Go to Server Settings → Integrations → Talksy → Manage

Some members aren't being translated

Inline translation is per member. Each member who wants it must:

  • Pick a language with /talksy language:spanish
  • Write in a channel an admin has added
  • Opt in again in each server, since the setting is per server

More fixes in the troubleshooting guide and the Talksy docs.

Your server is multilingual

Members who opted in are now translated inline, under their own name and avatar, flag reactions work for everyone, and routes can give each language its own channel.
