How webhook translation looks
In a Discord channel:
Hola, ¿cómo están todos?
Hello, how is everyone?
Hey Maria! We're doing great!
¡Hola Maria! ¡Estamos muy bien!
Maria opted in to English and John to Spanish, so each message also appears in the other language, under the same name and avatar.
How webhook translation works
Message detection
When a member who opted in with /talksy sends a message in an enabled channel, Talksy detects its language and translates it into the language that member chose.
Posting through a webhook
Talksy keeps one webhook per channel and, for each translation, posts through it with:
- The original user's avatar
- The original username + target language flag
- Example: "Sarah 🇫🇷" for French translation
Translation delivery
The webhook posts the translated message immediately after the original, creating a natural bilingual conversation flow that everyone can follow.
Webhook vs DM translation
Technical benefits of webhooks
Performance
Talksy keeps one webhook per channel and reuses it for every translation instead of creating a new one each time, which keeps it well within Discord's limits. A typical translation lands in about a second.
User experience
Translations appear right under the original, in order. Users can read entire conversations without switching between DMs and channels.
Moderation
Server moderators can see all translations, making it easier to moderate multilingual conversations and ensure community guidelines are followed.
Accessibility
Screen readers and accessibility tools work better with inline messages compared to fragmented DM conversations.
Setting up webhook translation
Requirements
Talksy needs the Manage Webhooks permission to post translations as the speaker. It's included in the default invite link.
Quick setup
- Add Talksy to your server
- An admin clicks ⚡ Set up on the welcome message, or runs
/server enablethen/server channel add channel:#general - Each member who wants their messages translated runs
/talksy language:spanish - That's it: their messages now appear in both languages, posted as them.
Common questions
Do webhooks count against Discord limits?
Discord allows up to 15 webhooks per channel. Talksy uses one per channel and reuses it for every translation, so it barely touches that limit.
Can I customize the webhook appearance?
Each translation uses the original member's avatar, with their name followed by a flag for the translation language. The format is fixed so translations are always easy to recognise.
What happens when Talksy leaves the server?
Talksy automatically cleans up its webhooks when removed from a server, keeping your webhook list tidy.
Why webhook translation matters
Webhook translation changes how a Discord translation bot fits into a conversation. By keeping translations in the conversation flow, it:
- Creates truly inclusive multilingual communities
- Reduces friction in international gaming sessions
- Enables seamless business communication
- Preserves conversation context and flow
- Respects user preferences (no forced DMs)
That's why Talksy is built around webhook translation.
